Our job at the ALMC is to help with the
journey of creating success in an educational environment
for students, their parents and local schools. For some students
that positive learning environment may take place for a duration
in an independent school that is especially adapted to meet
a student’s individual needs.
The ALMC has long advocated that there be a
continuum of educational and therapeutic services for children
with developmental disabilities. The ALMC additionally advocates
that these services be regulated and provided as a professional
option for parents, students and their local schools. Our independent
schools are one part of the continuum and are approved by the
State of Vermont.
Our independent schools will provide
education in the domains of academics, life-skills, social
pragmatics, and physical, recreational and therapeutic services
for school age children with physical and cognitive disabilities.
Through a collaborative approach that integrates educational
and related services (Speech and Language Therapy, Physical
Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Behavioral Intervention),
we create a comprehensive educational program for each student. The
school’s philosophy
incorporates many different instructional styles depending on
the student population’s learning needs, and goals. We
are prepared to adapt our approach in order to best serve each
individual student.
The ALMC views physical movement, recreational
activities and community ventures as vital to the overall academic
success of the student. The ALMC incorporates swimming, yoga
and community outings into their weekly field trips. All of
the programs are accomplished utilizing the ALMC’s philosophy
of integrated services.
The ALMC maintains effective communication
by holding monthly meetings for each student, inviting the
parents, sending school staff and any other service providers
involved. We also
maintain effective communication with parents/guardians by creating
a daily home/school communication system, either through a journal
or verbal communication.
